2022 Geminids meteor shower
The 2022 Geminids meteor shower will peak between December 13 and 14, with fair weather and mild LP (light pollution) due to the first quarter Moon. The Geminids can be seen every year between December 4 and December 17, with peak activity around December 14. Most meteor showers are associated with comets, but the Geminids shower is caused by the debris of an asteroid (3200 Phaethon). The shower gets its name from the constellation Gemini, and the asteroid round the Sun in about 1.4 years. Because the Moon is in its first quarter, viewing conditions for meteors will be favorable. Viewers in the Northern Hemisphere (Orange County) should try to see the Geminids after sunset on December 13 and before daybreak on December 14. It is not required to look in a specific direction to witness a meteor shower, although OC Astronomy recommends gazing east to see the Geminids.
